6th Grade will explore the standards of literature, including analysis of short stories, novels, novellas, poetry, drama, nonfiction, and multi-media text, deepening their understanding of theme, literary devices, use of evidence, and authorial intent.
7th Grade will deepen their understanding of story elements and forms of literature through thematic units researching Identity, Utopia/Dystopia, Myths/Legends/Fairytales, Poetry, and The Human Experience.
8th Grade will prepare for the rigors of high school through units focusing on independent research, creative input, and personal accountability. Students will examine literary concepts such as irony, equivocation, influence of dynamic mechanisms on plot/theme/setting/character/etc., and narrative manipulation of themes and messages through units researching questions such as “What makes us human?”, “What scares us?”, “Is every hero somebody else’s villain?”, “How has humanity changed through history?”, and “How will history remember me?”.
